Self Defense Statistics and Facts
Thought about a Women’s Self Defense Class in Auburn, AL? How about an MMA class in Auburn? Maybe a Jiu Jitsu class in Auburn. Why? If its to lose weight and get in shape, that will work, but so would a fitness class. If it is to compete in a sporting event, MMA and Jiu Jitsu would be great choices, but so would softball or basketball. What if it is to learn self defense? Every martial art markets themselves as self defense, but are they?
No. Martial arts have self defense application, but the are not self defense systems. They are sports. Visit a school. You will see more little kids running around having a ball than you will adults. You will see board breaking, buddy night, pizza parties, summer camps, after school programs, and birthday parties. Is that what you want to trust with your life?
I love Jiu Jitsu, there is even a large portion of Krav Maga that is based on it. I love kickboxing and MMA. There is a large portion of Krav Maga based on those too. But, I wouldn’t use either of them for self defense. Thats not their purpose. Let me illustrate my point.
According to the FBI Crime Date Explorer, in 2021 55.8% of all violent crimes were committed with a firearm. 10.5% were committed with a knife. 14.8% were committed with some other weapon. No weapon was used to commit a violent crime in less than 20% (18.9% to be exact) of all incidents.
Here is a diagram as a visual:
In Jiu Jitsu, Karate, MMA, and Kickboxing, you do not learn to defend against attacks with weapons. THEY ARE SPORTS and weapons are illegal and have no place in them.
So, if you are violently attacked and plan to defend yourself with Karate, Taekwondo, MMA, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, etc… in a BEST CASE scenario, you have less than a 20% chance that your training is applicable.
Krav Maga is the fighting style developed for the Israeli Military. Krav Maga is what Women’s Self Defense classes are based upon. Krav Maga is what special forces and law enforcement defensive tactics are based on. Krav Maga experts even wrote the Marine Corp Martial Arts Program.
